Young Guns Coral Competition at Five Flags Speedway
Teenaged drivers dominated the headlines in Friday night's racing action at Five Flags Speedway. Fourteen-year-old Hunter Robbins won the 50-lap Season Championship race for Pro Late models; Danny Martin Jr., who is four years his elder, was victorious in the hotly-contested USCS Sprint Car feature; and second-generation racer, Brandon Carlson claimed the Pro Late Model track championship. Ronnie Smith, past his teen years, was the winner in the 30-lap Modified race after not racing for two years.Danny Martin Jr. of Sarastoa, Fl; held off fellow teenager and track record holder, Kevin Swindell for a 4 car length victory in the 30 lap USCS Sprint Car feature. 19-year-old Martin Jr. had a hot night of racing on a cool evening, sweeping the dash, his heat, and the feature. Swindell passed Matt Tiffany on lap 16 and pressured Martin to the finish, but Martin precisely threaded his way through lap traffic to seal the victory. He led from flag to flag.
Swindell missed breaking his own track record by .006 seconds, but was the fastest of 19 qualifiers with his 14.468 second qualifying lap. The father-son duo of Wayne Reutimann Jr., and Sr., finished third and fourth. Defending USCS champion Terry Gray won his heat race and finished fifth in the feature.
